Kawhi Leonard, 2× NBA champion, 2× NBA Finals MVP, 5× NBA All-Star, NBA All-Star Game MVP, 3× All-NBA First Team, 2× All-NBA Second Team, 2× NBA Defensive Player of the Year , and 3× NBA All-Defensive First Team, has an interesting personality tied behind all of those impeccable accolades. Kawhi has had much success in the NBA, although it didn’t happen immediately for him. He didn’t get much playing time at first, but as his teammate Tim Duncan’s career gradually seemed to come closer to retirement year by year, Kawhi began blossoming as a star. He became known as an incredible two player, being able to score with great success on offense and defense. He then entered his next tier as a star and soon enough he became a superstar and an MVP candidate, and the most interesting part of his career thus far has been how he is such a mystery. He has always been very quiet, somewhat of an awkward personality, and just left fans wondering “He just seems so different…”
Kawhi grew up in Compton, California, which is surely not where some people want to grow up. He grew up as a humble kid, playing football and basketball. His dad, who worked at a car wash, always had the preference for him to play football, but he truly was happy as long as Kawhi was happy. His dad made sure to teach him to be hard-working and tough. He bounced around between the sports until he was placed on an AAU basketball team where he thrived as a player, and he actually played with NBA player Tony Snell. Like many deaths that happen in Compton, the murder of his father seemed senseless. To this very day, no one has been arrested. He seems emotionally scarred and has a chip on his shoulder from what he undergoes every day from this loss. Although, now he felt new motivation to make the league, so he could make his father proud. He decided from then on, he’d wake up at 5 in the morning, working out prior to his classes. Then, he would run drills with basketball and working out after classes. He ultimately decided to play collegiate basketball in San Diego State, despite being offered to play at UCLA. He ultimately made his father, who is watching him, happy as he was drafted to the NBA and exceeded his expectations as a player and person. Kawhi clearly shows that in life, it’s okay to be quiet and let your talents and skills do all the talking for you. At the end of the day, Kawhi is just a kid who locked himself in his room on his birthdays, he is the teen who brought two lamps to the gym to his early morning workouts because the school didn’t turn on the lights, and he is an NBA superstar who still drives a 1997 Chevy Tahoe, the same car he’s had since high school.
