Storytelling: Whatever happened to Bison Dele?

Writer's picture: Alex KupermanAlex Kuperman

Disclaimer: This story is quite dark and more intense than you would expect, but it’s a story not enough people have heard about. Definitely a tough one to take in, hope you enjoy.

Bison Dele was an NBA player with a ridiculously dark NBA story tied to his name. He averaged 11 points, 6 rebounds, and showed up to hoop in 413 games. He bounced around a lot playing for the Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets, LA Clippers, and for the Detroit Pistons.

Bison had a very interesting and unique relationship with his brother during his NBA career. His brother was always reaching out to him regarding these crazy schemes where it was very careless with Bison’s money, and seemed like he was being used. It eventually led to Bison rejecting a 5 year/$34 million deal when he was 30 years old. Bison was a man who turned down $36 million and five years remaining on his NBA contract to travel the world instead, with his girlfriend who he very much wanted to be with.

He eventually retired and went on a boat with his brother and his girlfriend out to the sea. Sounds very nice, right? Imagine the beautiful waters, scenery, the gorgeous noises of the water splashing against the boat. Nope, there’s no catch. Maybe now you can understand why one would choose to travel the world, and be at peace, rather than play the game you love for millions of dollars. Well, a few days later, his girlfriend and him are missing. Oh boy, here we go. Bison’s sketchy brother is the only one to be found from the boat, although their parents, who are always in close contact with Bison, make a call to the police. They ask the police to find their kid and his girlfriend and they notice a very strange transaction from Bisons bank statement was a

check for $150,000 to buy gold coins. Following this, they call the brother to be interviewed, but he didn’t help them very much. He wouldn’t answer much, but would mostly just say that Bison and his girlfriend needed help and that money was meant to help them.

The police ultimately found Bison’s brother, Miles, and he finally told his side of the story. He told them that he and Bison had gotten into a physical altercation and Bison accidentally made harsh contact with Serena, who was hoping to stop the fight and make peace, but she fell and hit her head on the boat. She unfortunately passed away from this. Miles then said that the captain wanted to report the death, but Bison wasn’t going to let this happen. Then, Bison killed the captain which led to Miles grabbing a handgun on the boat, and shot Bison and killed him because he was scared of what he could’ve done to him. He went on to add that he attached weights to all of their bodies and dumped all of them in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Miles knew he was ultimately going down regardless so we called his mom telling her that he would never hurt his little brother. Then he committed suicide by OD’ing on insulin. After his suicide nothing really could be done about the case, so it has been closed forever, which is what Miles probably wanted.
